Airway and Crisis Resource Management

Today we have got our inspiration from the 2005 case of the tragic death of 37 year old, Elaine Bromily post routine sinus surgery. This case catapulted Crisis Resource Management (CRM) into the spotlight due to the human factors involved in her death and her husband’s background as an airline pilot. Even those aware of this case will hopefully find todays topics of interest as we also have included specific talks focusing on airway management and CRM.

Confined Airway Management

Ross Hofmeyr discusses the options, techniques and evidence available for managing airways in constrained places. With the take home message of: “Learning to cope (and then excel) in abnormal fashions and positions makes us better at managing airways in both emergency and routine situations”

The Elaine Bromiley Case

In 2007, Martin Bromiley’s wife died due to medical error during a routine sinus operation. Due to his experience as an airliane pilot Martin has been able turn tragedy into safer health care practices by bringing crisis resource management principles into the medical setting.

For those who are unfamiliar with the case we suggest watching this short video and reading Tessa Davis’s article before moving onto the additional e-learning material.

Do we adequately understand human factors in how we work in hospitals?

How would you respond if your partner died from a “routine operation”?
