RUSUTSU 2019 CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

The 2019 Rusutsu Emergency Care Conference was one to remember with over 160 participants! There was a great range of topics presented which encouraged  excellent discussion on current practice and what we might be seeing in the near future! 

 

During the conference week there was a minimum of 10 hours of interactive content and a minimum of 10 hours of e-learning which included theory, case presentations, discussions on current research and clinical practice relevant to clinicians throughout Australia.

Below is an outline of what was covered during the conference week to assist with your CPD portfolio and if you require further details on anything listed below please don't hesitate to contact us via email.

Interactive Presentations (minimum of 10 hours) from Tuesday 13th - Saturday 17th of February 

 

Welcome Session (2 hours)

  • Focus on interaction between emergency care providers (paramedics, acute setting nurses and relevent doctors) 

  • Discussion on challenges of varying roles in the acute care setting 

  • Latest nation wide practice discussion

  • Look at the patient journey and overlap of skills from pre-hospital to in hospital care

Shoulder Dislocation (Dr Martin Ibach)

  • Anatomy of the shoulder 

  • Signs and symptoms of a dislocated shoulder (including anterior, posterior and  inferior)

  • Multiple enlocation techniques discussed including self enlocation

  • Complications of a dislocated shoulder

An Airway to be Mindful of (Dr Anand Senthi) (Presentation available by clicking blue button)

(Two part presentation: difficult airway case study and mental training for resuscitation) 

  •  Airway case study from personnel experience as ED Consultant 

  • Different types of airway management (inc. pros and cons) discussed

  • Multiple considerations for difficult airway covered

  • Mental state as main component of improving performance (knowledge, skills and experience unable to be changed in the moment)

  • Grossman stress model covered

  • Strategies Covered:

    • Breath: Tactical breathing (slow deep breaths)

    • Talk: Positive self talk (prior to and also in the moment)

    • See: mental preparation (visualisation) and emotional preparation 

    • Focus: use a trigger word

Back to the Future: CPR in 2050 (Dr David Anderson)

  • History of CPR progression through literature review

  • Current practice looking at both pre-hospital and hospital care covering:

    • Airway Interventions

    • Medications used

    • Scene considerations​

    • PIT crew model 

  • Future of CPR and role of ECMO

Madness in the ED (Dr Nigel Beck)

  • Discussion on current mental health assessment used by in the acute setting 

  •  Depression, bipolar affective disorder,, psychosis and schizophrenia covered in depth including 

    • Signs and symptoms​

    • Management tips

    • Suggested best practice

​

Leadership in the Medical Setting (Liam Langford)

  • Highly interactive workshop style presentation

  • Leadership traits (what makes a good leader)

  • Leadership competencies

​

Trauma in the Tropical North (Dr Felix Ho)

  • Personal experience and case studies of being involved in 3rd world ambulance health care (pre-hospital and in hospital)

​

Salvage Procedures (Dr Alexandra Archer)

  • Orbital and Cranial anatomy review

  • Series of case studies discussed

  • Literature review

Aeromedical Retrieval (Victoria Cluff)

  • Ambulance and hospital implications of aeromedical retrieval

  • Challenges of aeromedical retrieval

  • Current treatment provided in aeromedical retrieval (Australia)

E-Learning Topics (minimum of 10 hours) 

Available for completion via exclusive portal during conference week and all involve minimum of 30 minute discussions
